We invite paper submissions or proposals for panel discussions addressing any topic of interest to Christian philosophers. All areas of philosophy are welcome, including analytic and continental approaches.
Special Tracks
We also invite submissions for two special tracks being held. We will dedicate one morning session (four papers) to the topic of apologetics. We will also dedicate a morning session (four papers) to the topic of science, mathematics, and technology. The science and technology track will be followed in the afternoon by a panel discussion on the same topic. If you would like to apply to one of the two tracks, please indicate in your submission email for which track you would like to be considered.
Graduate Student Philosophy Paper Contest
As part of our initiative to help develop graduate student scholarship, the EPS will be awarding two prizes, $1000 for the best graduate student philosophy paper and $250 for the second place paper. In order to be considered for these prizes, full papers must be submitted. If you are a graduate student, please indicate this in your submission email so you can be considered for the contest. The final draft of the paper should not exceed 3,200 words. To receive the prizes, the authors must attend the meeting. If the winning author is unable to attend, the prize will go to the runner-up.
Deadline and Submission Process
To be considered, a proposal (abstract) of 100-200 words must be received by April 15, 2025, by the end of the day at epsblindreview@gmail.com. Abstracts should include a brief description of the philosophical problem and the proposed solution. There can only be one paper submission per person, but someone can serve on multiple panels or a panel and a paper. A single paper cannot be submitted for multiple categories. Proposals should be prepared for blind review and sent as either a doc(x) or PDF attachment. Panel proposals need not be formatted for blind review, but should include the format and speakers. Submissions that include the full text of the paper will be given priority. The body of the email should include the following information:

Your paper should take no more than 25 minutes to read, leaving 10-15 minutes for discussion.
Cancellation: Please communicate all cancellations to the moderator of your session. If you need to cancel your presentation and it has already been announced via the conference program, please plan to have a friend or colleague read your paper on your behalf.

Ben Arbour Memorial Student Paper Competition:
Student members whose papers are accepted for program inclusion will be eligible to enter a student paper competition. Students who wish to enter must submit the following to Greg Trickett at gtrickett@wc.edu by March 14, 2025:
A titled, full version of the paper to be presented (no more than 5,000 words) suitable for blind review. A 200-300 word abstract with the paper titled as it appears on the blind review submission, the student’s name, pursued degree, and societal (EPS or ETS) and institutional affiliation.
Winner(s) will be announced at the final plenary session of the conference. Students must present their papers at the conference to be considered for the competition.
Student Travel Grants
Southwest Region of ETS/EPS has travel grants available for ten student members who register to participate in the region’s conference. Eligible students must travel at least 100 miles for the conference. Available travel grants are for a maximum of $200. Mark Murphy, Chris Tucker, and Christian Miller are very happy to announce the ninth of their workshops on theism and ethics held September 11-13, 2025 at William & Mary.
The invited speakers this year are Talbot Brewer (University of Virginia), Lara Buchak (Princeton University), Terence Cuneo (University of Vermont), Anne Jeffrey (Baylor University), and Mark Murphy (Georgetown University).
Goal: Contemporary philosophy of religion has been richly informed by important work in metaphysics and epistemology. At the same time, there has not been nearly as much work done at the intersection of philosophy of religion and meta-ethics or normative theory. To help inspire more good work in this area, Christian Miller (Wake Forest), Mark Murphy (Georgetown), and Chris Tucker (William & Mary) have been organizing a series of annual workshops on theistic ethics for a number of years.
Logistics: The ninth workshop will be held at William & Mary in Williamsburg, VA. We will begin with dinner and the first paper on Thursday, September 11th and conclude at the end of the day on Saturday, September 13, 2025. There will be five invited papers and four spots for submitted papers. All papers have roughly 40 minutes for presentation and 40 minutes for discussion.
Themes: “Theistic ethics” is to be understood broadly to include such topics as divine command and divine will theories, God and natural law, ethics and the problem of evil, moral arguments for a theistic being, infused and acquired virtues, the harms and benefits of theistic religions, specific ethical issues in Judaism, Christianity, or Islam, and many other topics as well.
Applying: Those interested in participating should submit an abstract of up to 750 words and a current C.V. to Chris Tucker at cstucker@wm.edu by June 1, 2025. Word or PDF file formats only. Please prepare abstracts for anonymous review. For although the organizers seek to have a balanced program both in terms of topics and presenters, the initial stage of review will be done anonymously. Submitters to a previous year’s workshop, whether successful or unsuccessful, are welcome to apply to this year’s workshop.
Notification will be made by June 17, 2025. If your abstract is selected, we will cover your accommodation, meals, and travel. Co-authors are welcome, but only one author’s expenses can be covered. You do not have to send your paper in advance of the workshop, and it certainly can be a work in progress.

Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s writings contain many moral ideas, especially in Discipleship and Life Together. His Ethics, which he never finished, is also a rich trove of moral philosophy, but because of its unfinished nature, scholars debate how we should best understand it. Much of Bonhoeffer scholarship is conducted in the realm of theology and religious studies, but this volume seeks to add a much-needed philosophical perspective.
Gregory L. Bock and Michael W. Austin, both philosophers, both ethicists, are soliciting chapter proposals on topics of Bonhoeffer’s moral philosophy that address questions of interpretation and application. Suggested topics include: Bonhoeffer and virtue ethics, divine command theory, racial justice, political activism, moral discernment, immigration policy, environmental ethics, conflict resolution, etc.
Proposals should be between 200 and 300 words and attached to an email as a Word document prepared for blind review. A separate CV should also be attached. Please send to gbock@uttyler.edu by January 31, 2025.

As we come to the end of the year, I am filled with gratitude for EPS and the good it does in both the academy and the church.
I am grateful for the successful national meeting in San Diego, which was filled with wonderful and challenging talks, including an insightful talk on divine hiddenness by Charity Anderson of Baylor University. Notably, Mike Austin finished his second term as president of the EPS, and I assumed the role in his place. Thank you for electing me as president. Please pray for me as I seek to move the society forward. I am also happy to announce the exciting news that Joel Alvarez (University of South Florida) won first place in the graduate student essay prize for his paper “Original Sin’s Compatibility with Evolution through Epigenetics,” and Jordan Parris (Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary) won second place for her paper “Will and Willer: Maximus the Confessor’s Will-Willer Distinction Applied to Trinity Monotheism.”
In conjunction with the national meeting, Tyson James hosted the Sound Faith Consulting Apologetics Conference featuring speakers from EPS such as William Lane Craig, Mike Licona, and executive committee member Melissa Cain Travis. It was a great conference, and helped EPS fulfill its vision “to make its resources available to the church and to equip believers in the task of outreach.”
